Follow the Prophet through good character
“We should work upon our akhlaq.”
Muslims should follow Prophet Muhammad as their role model by cultivating sincere, habitual good character, compassion for the ummah, and commitment to the Quran and Sunnah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines taqwa as mindfulness of Allah expressed through obedience and avoiding prohibitions.
- Presents Prophet Muhammad as the universal role model through Surah al-Ahzab and the last two verses of Surah Tawbah.
- Uses the one-body comparison to urge empathy, prayer, awareness, advocacy, and community support, including concern for Palestine.
- Emphasizes sincere charity, volunteering, teaching Quran, and participating alongside the community.
- Describes the Prophet’s mercy, concern for guidance, and role in transforming humanity through Quran and Sunnah.
- Explains exalted character as habitual conduct and urges listeners to embody Quranic ethics in daily relationships.
- Calls listeners to study the seerah, send blessings on the Prophet, maintain Quran recitation, adhkar, istighfar, and tawbah.
In the khateeb's words
“Similarly, the ummah, brothers and sisters, have different skills. And we all complete one another.”
“The least that you can do is make dua for your brothers and sisters. The least that we can do is spread awareness. The least that we can do is use our voice.”
“If we hold on to the Quran and the Sunnah, you will not be misguided and you will not be wretched. You will be happy in the akhirah, in this dunya and in the akhirah.”
“So we should work upon our akhlaq, brothers and sisters. It's very important.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Prophet Muhammad is our best role model in worship, kindness, patience, and concern for others. The Prophet cared deeply about his ummah, so Muslims should care when other people suffer and respond with dua, awareness, service, and sincere help. Good character should become part of who we are, not something we show only occasionally. We can grow by treating our families well, studying the Prophet’s life, and following the Quran and Sunnah. Small habits such as Quran recitation, adhkar, istighfar, and tawbah help keep our hearts guided.
- What is one way our family can complete or support someone else in our community?
- Which good character trait would you like to practice until it becomes second nature?
- What daily Quran or worship habit could help keep you guided this week?
