Screen time needs a higher purpose

“We all need a deep sense of purpose.”

The khateeb, at 26:01

In one sentence

Reducing screen time requires recovering a sense of purpose and identity as worshippers, character-builders, servants of humanity, and family members, then redirecting reclaimed time toward meaningful action.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Revisits how excessive phone use consumes precious life and why surface-level restrictions are insufficient.
  2. Critiques a life conveyor belt centered on school, work, money, housing, and conventional success.
  3. Distinguishes becoming a person of character from merely doing more activities.
  4. Frames worship, stewardship of the earth, and service to humanity as central human purposes.
  5. Uses Abu Bakr’s voluntary service as an example of purposeful, disciplined living.

For the dinner table

Shaykh Usman said our phones can consume precious time, but simply deleting apps is not enough if we do not know what our time is for. Islam gives us a larger identity: we worship Allah, grow in character, care for the world, serve people, and nurture our families. A strong purpose helps us say no to distractions and yes to learning, service, Quran, and meaningful relationships. He reminded us that being physically near family is not the same as connecting with them; criticism and questions can feel like an interrogation. This week, we can reclaim some screen time and use it to become better people and offer something good to others.

  1. What is one way our family can use reclaimed screen time to learn or serve?
  2. What does it feel like to be truly listened to instead of questioned or corrected?
  3. Who are you becoming, not just what are you doing?
