Closeness should protect people’s honor

“Closeness should make you more trustworthy to them.”

The khateeb, at 9:54

In one sentence

Because people are an amanah from Allah, believers must protect their privacy, honor, and rights, especially when closeness, anger, or hurt makes that difficult, and do so for Allah’s sake.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. The Prophet’s example shows that every person deserves dignity, teaching, correction, and care.
  2. People entrusted with private access carry an amanah: closeness should increase protection, not entitlement.
  3. Satr, avoiding ghibah, and rejecting slander protect people’s honor; believers should also avoid situations that invite suspicion.
  4. When relationships sour, anger cannot erase others’ rights; justice, boundaries, forgiveness, and mercy remain obligations.
  5. Taqwa means doing right for Allah when unseen, illustrated by Yusuf’s refusal behind locked doors.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that people are an amanah from Allah, especially when they trust us with private parts of their lives. Closeness should make us more careful with someone’s name, weaknesses, and dignity, not give us ownership over their story. Even when someone hurts us, anger does not cancel their rights, so we should keep our justice, mercy, and good character. We can set boundaries and walk away without exposing or humiliating people. The strongest character is doing what pleases Allah when nobody else is watching.

  1. What does it look like to keep someone’s trust safe?
  2. How can we stay fair when we feel angry or hurt?
  3. What helps us choose the right action when nobody else can see us?
