Smiling brings the Prophet's Sunnah to life
“Our deen is a comprehensive program about how to be a good human being you can't be a good Muslim without being a good person.”
The khutbah argues that smiling, gentleness, attention, and inclusive joy are core expressions of the Prophet's Sunnah and should be practiced deliberately in our homes and communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces smiling as sadaqah and a neglected part of religiosity.
- Uses Qur'anic mercy and the Prophet's gentleness to show that good intentions must be embodied wisely.
- Illustrates prophetic warmth through greetings, attention, gift-giving, forgiveness, and universal benefit.
- Connects smiling and positive presence to social, emotional, physical, and leadership benefits.
- Calls listeners to imitate the Prophet in daily interactions, feedback, family life, and connection with nature.
- Closes by urging listeners to make the Sunnah alive at home and praying for oppressed communities and reunion in Jannah.
In the khateeb's words
“having a good intention is not enough you have to intend what is good and you have to do what is good”
“our deen is a comprehensive program about how to be a good human being you can't be a good Muslim without being a good person”
“we have to make it alive in our homes we have to make, spread that beauty and be beautiful yourself be positive, be uplifting life is already hard let's not make it harder”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that smiling at someone is an act of charity and part of the Prophet’s example. The Prophet welcomed people warmly, gave them his attention, and taught with love and mercy. The khateeb explained that good intentions need to be matched by good actions, including kindness when we correct someone. We can follow this example by being first to say salam, noticing our family members, and bringing joy to people beyond our own friends. He encouraged us to make these teachings alive in our homes through patience, listening, and everyday kindness.
- Who could you greet first tomorrow, and how could you help them feel welcome?
- When did someone’s attention or kindness help you feel noticed?
