Mercy means giving people what they need

“Allah is merciful to those who are merciful on earth.”

The khateeb, at 6:46

In one sentence

Because Allah’s mercy sustains creation and appears through prophetic example and everyday compassion, believers should preserve kinship, fulfill promises, and respond appropriately to others’ needs.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah’s mercy surrounds us and sustains us every day. The word rahma is connected to rahm, the womb, so caring for family and preserving relationships are important acts of faith. Mercy means giving people what they truly need, whether that is food, water, money, advice, forgiveness, or simple attention. The stories of promise-keeping and the boy who delivered a leaflet show that small acts can change someone’s life. We should keep practicing mercy and ask Allah to give us merciful hearts.

  1. When has someone shown you mercy in a way you still remember?
  2. How can we give the right kind of help to someone who is struggling?
  3. What promise can you keep this week as an act of kindness?
