Muslims must believe in and honor Jesus
“To be Muslim, you have to believe in Jesus as well, and respect all of the Prophets and Messengers.”
Islam requires belief in and deep respect for Jesus as a prophet and messenger while rejecting his divinity and encouraging respectful conversations with Christians.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Challenges the misconception that Muslims hate Jesus and introduces Islam’s view of him.
- Explains that belief in every prophet, including Isa, is essential to Muslim faith.
- Highlights Quranic honor for Isa and Maryam through named surahs and repeated mentions.
- Presents the belief that Isa was not crucified and will return near the end times.
- Affirms Jesus as Allah’s servant and messenger, not God or God’s son.
- Urges kindness toward Christians while rejecting participation in celebrations understood as affirming Jesus’ divinity.
In the khateeb's words
“That's one of the pillars of Iman, that's one of the pillars of Islam. To love and respect all of Messengers and Prophets.”
“To be Muslim, you have to believe in Jesus as well, and respect all of the Prophets and Messengers.”
“As a Muslim, I believe that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will send back Prophet Isa alayhi as-salam to al-Dunya again, to our earth again, to protect us and save us.”
“Despite, for even though all of this respect and all of this honor, we believe that Isa alayhi wa sallam is abdullahi wa rasuluhu.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah focused on the love and respect Muslims have for Jesus, Prophet Isa. The khateeb explained that believing in all of Allah's prophets, including Jesus, is essential to Muslim faith. He highlighted the honor given to Jesus and his mother Maryam in the Quran and spoke about the Muslim belief that Jesus will return. He encouraged us to correct misunderstandings with evidence and explain our beliefs to Christian friends. He also emphasized that Muslims regard Jesus as Allah's servant and messenger, rather than God or God's son, and urged kindness toward Christian neighbors while warning against joining their Christmas celebrations.
- What would you tell a friend who thought Muslims did not love Jesus?
- How could you check whether a video about someone's religion is telling the truth?
- What is one way we can show kindness to a friend whose religious beliefs differ from ours?
