Overlook small faults to strengthen relationships

“Be attentive, be perceptive, be alert, but at the same time overlook and don't nitpick.”

The khateeb, at 21:16

Believers should honor Jumu'ah with undivided attention and cultivate strong relationships by wisely overlooking nonessential mistakes while addressing what can be changed.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb started with a reminder about Jumu'ah. Allah tells us to put work and school on pause for it, so when we come we keep our phones away, we stop chatting, and we listen. He said we do this out of respect for Allah, not for the speaker. Then he talked about something that keeps families and friendships strong: overlooking each other's small mistakes and habits instead of nitpicking every detail. He told the story of Aisha knocking a dish of food to the ground in front of the Prophet's guests. The Prophet, peace be upon him, calmly picked up the food and simply said, "Your mother has become jealous." Good character takes practice, and the people with the best character will be closest to the Prophet on the Day of Judgment.

  1. If you broke something in front of guests, how would you want your family to react?
  2. Why do you think the khateeb asked everyone to keep their phones in their pockets during Jumu'ah?
