Eid teaches loving surrender to Allah
“The essence of the lesson is to surrender lovingly inside of us, under all those circumstances, to Allah Azza wa Jal.”
Eid al-Adha should renew our loving surrender to Allah by sacrificing the ego’s selfish will and carrying that surrender through hardship and ease.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls believers to taqwa and to choose a life of Islam before death.
- Frames Eid al-Adha as a lesson in surrender under both hardship and comfort.
- Reflects on Ibrahim’s trials, steadfastness, migration, and prayer for a righteous child.
- Explores Ibrahim and his son’s mutual submission to Allah’s command.
- Explains that the sacrifice symbolizes slaughtering the nafs rather than harming a person.
- Concludes that surrender brings freedom, transformation, and renewed commitment to Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“We do not have a choice about when to die. We do not have a choice about where to die. We do have a choice about how to die.”
“the essence of the lesson is to surrender lovingly inside of us, under all those circumstances, to Allah Azza wa Jal.”
“Remember. What am I slaughtering? Am I making the commitment to Allah through this. That He does not ask me to offer my son.”
“And when I surrender to Allah Azza wa Jal. I am free. And the world. No matter what happens in the world. I am free from the world. In Allah Azza wa Jal.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that although we cannot choose when or where we die, we can choose to live in loving surrender to Allah. Prophet Ibrahim’s life showed this surrender through both hardship and blessing, because each can test the heart. His willingness to sacrifice what he deeply loved was ultimately about overcoming the nafs, not losing his son. Eid al-Adha invites us to ask what pride, desire, control, or selfishness we need to give up for Allah. When we surrender sincerely, we become less controlled by the world and more inwardly free.
- What is one choice you can make this week that shows loving surrender to Allah?
- Why can something good and enjoyable be a test, just like something difficult?
- What is one selfish habit you would like Allah to help you overcome?
