Steadfastness means following Allah’s commands
“You worship Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala like He wants you to worship Him.”
Istiqamah means remaining steadfast to Allah’s commands throughout life by acting for Allah, seeking His help, and following the standards He revealed, especially in observing Jumu'ah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Sufyan ibn Abdillah’s request for concise guidance and the Prophet’s answer: believe in Allah, then remain steadfast.
- Defines istiqamah as holding to Allah’s commands and prohibitions despite hardship and returning to Him after mistakes.
- Explains three pillars: steadfastness for Allah, through Allah’s assistance, and according to Allah’s revealed commands.
- Applies the concept to integrity, worship, family life, learning the deen, and avoiding self-created standards of religiosity.
- Presents attending Jumu'ah as an obligation and reviews preparation, early arrival, and Friday etiquettes.
- Emphasizes attentive listening without talking or distractions, then closes with supplication.
In the khateeb's words
“you worship Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala like He wants you to worship Him and we notice this subhanallah in all our daily lives”
“we do not talk we do not get distracted subhanallah with our phones with our keys with our children and so on and so forth we pay full attention”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that istiqamah means staying true to Allah’s commands through life, even when things are hard, and returning to Him after we slip. We should do this for Allah, ask Allah to help us, and follow what Allah and His Messenger actually asked rather than our own ideas. The speaker used Jumu'ah as a practical example: coming to the masjid is an obligation and an act of worship, not only a social visit. Families can honor Friday by preparing with ghusl, good clothing, scent, and, when able, Surat Al-Kahf, arriving early, and sending blessings on the Prophet. During the khutbah, we should listen attentively and avoid talking or playing with phones, keys, or other distractions.
- When is it hardest for you to stay steadfast, and what helps you return to Allah?
- What Friday habit could our family improve together?
- How can we make listening during the khutbah easier and more respectful?
