Trust Allah when obedience feels hard
“It's time that our trust in Allah is manifested through our actions.”
The khutbah argues that Hudaybiyyah teaches Muslims to trust Allah's commands even when they seem disadvantageous, making that trust visible through prayer, obedience, and action amid hardship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with praise, testimony, taqwa, and gratitude for Allah's blessings and Friday's opportunity for forgiveness.
- Introduces the Seerah and Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, explaining persecution, migration to Medina, and the attempt to perform Umrah.
- Reviews the treaty's painful concessions and the companions' hesitation, especially over returning converts and postponing Umrah.
- Shows how honoring the treaty enabled peace, da'wah, new conversions, and the peaceful return to Mecca with 10,000 Muslims.
- Applies the lesson to contemporary suffering, urging trust in Allah, prayer for the oppressed, and actions that embody one's du'a.
- Closes with the story of the child praying for Palestine, the rain-jacket analogy, and supplications for sincere reliance.
In the khateeb's words
“When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Gives us a command It is always what's best for us We have to trust in that command Of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“There's a reason for it Even if I don't understand it yet I know And I trust the source that told me I need to do this”
“none of you believed your dua would be accepted enough that you prepared for the rain”
“It's time that our trust in Allah is manifested through our actions In how we make dua and how we act”
For the dinner table
The khutbah uses the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah to teach that Allah's wisdom may be hidden when a situation looks like a loss. The Prophet and his companions accepted difficult terms, kept their word, and later saw peace create space for da'wah and Islam to grow. We are encouraged to trust Allah's commands even when they are hard or misunderstood. The speaker connects this lesson to today's suffering, especially in Palestine, and reminds us to make dua while letting our actions show real trust. Like bringing an umbrella when praying for rain, believers should prepare and act in ways that match what they ask Allah for.
- Where in your life is it hardest to trust Allah before you see the outcome?
- What would it look like for our actions to match the duas we make?
- How can our family remember and support people suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, and elsewhere?
