Abraham's legacy calls us to seek truth
“Asking sincere questions is an act of devotion.”
The khutbah argues that Abraham’s legacy calls Muslims to center God, seek truth through reason, earn leadership through ethical service, and pursue justice, peace, and compassion.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The Hajj is presented as a commemoration of Ibrahim, Hajar, and Ismail.
- Hajj rituals teach God-centeredness, perseverance, equity, and care for the underprivileged.
- Ibrahim is described as Hanif and Muslim, with identity defined by conduct rather than labels.
- Ibrahim’s tested leadership demonstrates that authority is earned through obedience, service, and ethics.
- The sermon applies these principles to misinformation, interfaith claims, coexistence, Gaza, and defending the oppressed.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for peace, justice, steadfastness, healing, and communal reminders.
In the khateeb's words
“God's centeredness is something that will carry us through. Throughout our time and remembering God at all times in times of adversity or in times of prosperity.”
“It is about, it's not about what you call yourself. It's about your behavior, your actions, your ethics, your faith.”
“Therefore, when we are together discussing any issue, it is important to ask sincere questions. And asking sincere questions is an act of devotion.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah invited us to carry Prophet Ibrahim's legacy into our daily lives through faith, thoughtful questions, and service. The khateeb explained that Hajj reminds us to keep God at the center of our lives, learn from Hajar's persistence and leadership, and help people who have less than we do. He reminded us that sincere questions can deepen faith, just as Ibrahim sought reassurance for his heart. He also taught that leadership is earned through ethical action and serving others, rather than through family connections or titles. Following Ibrahim means showing our faith through our actions, seeking truth humbly, and treating God's creation with love while standing up for peace and justice.
- What is one choice tomorrow where you could remember God before you act?
- What question about faith would you like us to explore together?
- How could you serve someone this week without needing credit or a special title?
