Strengthen the inner self through good deeds
“Even if the worst case scenario happens, you still win.”
The khutbah argues that believers must struggle against the nafs by strengthening it through good deeds while restraining its passions, because inner change, patience, and resistance to anxiety lead to guidance and success.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Revisits the struggle against Shaytan and identifies the nafs as an inner adversary.
- Explains the nafs through a kingdom analogy, emphasizing its preference for immediate pleasure over long-term consequences.
- Describes the nafs as dangerous because it is internal, beloved, and capable of blinding people to harm.
- Teaches that good deeds strengthen the nafs while resisting passions and worship keep it under control.
- Calls listeners to control their limbs and change inwardly before expecting outward change.
- Applies patience and perseverance to anxiety, food insecurity, alarming information, and fear of future hardship.
- Announces a mosque food pantry and requests support for gift cards and donations.
In the khateeb's words
“Your love of the thing Blind you and deafen you.”
“by doing good deeds. You strengthen it by doing good. and you weaken it, in other words, you keep in control, by denying the passions, the things that you want.”
“So even if the worst case scenario happens, you still win. That's what they call a win-win situation.”
“Why are they telling me this? 'cause they want you to be worried. They want you to be stressed out. They want you to act rash.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that the nafs is the part of us drawn toward immediate pleasure, and Shaytan can use that tendency against us. We should not try to destroy ourselves, but train the nafs by doing good deeds, resisting harmful desires, and staying committed to worship. Real change begins inside, and patience means continuing even when results are not immediate. When frightening news makes us anxious, we can remember past troubles we survived and avoid reacting rashly. The sermon also encouraged the community to support a food pantry helping families facing food insecurity.
- What is one desire you could practice saying no to this week?
- When have you worried about something that turned out better than expected?
- How could our family help someone who is struggling to afford food?
