True freedom means serving Allah
“Independence Day is any day where you and I say, Ya Allah, I'm done with my nafs.”
True freedom is not serving every desire or claiming unlimited choice; it is freeing oneself from the nafs and Shaytan by living as a grateful servant of Allah, following the Prophet's Sunnah, and building character in family and community.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reframes July 4 freedom by asking whether apparent freedom can become another form of slavery.
- Identifies the nafs and Shaytan as enemies that foster ego, ingratitude, and resistance to obedience.
- Applies this warning to education, wealth, marriage, parenting, and care for aging parents.
- Argues that declining family happiness reflects weakened connection to Allah, deen, and belief in the hereafter.
- Uses the sahabi's speech to Rustam to define freedom as release from human domination into Allah's servitude and justice.
- Urges following the Sunnah, studying the seerah, pondering Surah al-Kahf, and resisting the nafs.
- Closes with announcements and encouragement to keep youth connected to the masjid, scholars, and productive programs.
In the khateeb's words
“If a person, subhanAllah, never made that effort to create boys and girls of character, he will be building with his own hands a Frankenstein.”
“Independence Day is any day where you and I say, Ya Allah, I'm done with my nafs. I'm done with Shaytan. I am your slave.”
“Allah has sent us. To take humanity and humans, servants, out of the slavery of fellow humans.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah asked us to think about what it really means to be free. The khateeb explained that serving Allah helps us become free from the control of our nafs, our lower desires and ego, and from Shaytan. He reminded us to appreciate blessings such as prayer, food, safety, and time with family. He warned that pride can hurt our relationships, and that education and money alone do not build good character. He encouraged us to strengthen our connection with Allah, learn about the Prophet's life, and follow his Sunnah so that our faith shapes how we treat others.
- What is one blessing you enjoyed today that you sometimes forget to thank Allah for?
- When someone disagrees with you, what could help you pause and respond kindly?
- What is one way we can practice good character together this week?
