Lowering your gaze protects your heart

“The hearts will come up into the throat due to the amount of stress mankind will experience that day.”

The khateeb, at 5:41

In one sentence

Lowering the gaze protects the heart from corruption caused by endless screen content and earns the believer the sweetness of iman, the love of Allah, and protection from the hellfire.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening with Surah Ghafir: warning of the approaching Day of Judgment when hearts reach the throats
  2. Allah knows the deception of the eyes and what hearts conceal; every glance is recorded and will be testified to by our faculties and skin
  3. The eyes are the biggest gateway to the heart; hours of scrolling floods the heart with useless content and kills khushu in worship
  4. Command to lower the gaze (Surah an-Nur); whoever safeguards his gaze safeguards his heart
  5. Second khutbah: the body and eyes are an amanah from Allah; guarding the gaze is harder than guarding the tongue (Ibn Mas'ud)
  6. Benefits of lowering the gaze per Ibn al-Qayyim: removes sadness, brings halawatul iman, earns Allah's love, grants firasa, strengthens the heart
  7. Hadith of the three eyes that will never see the hellfire; Imam Shafi'i: iman never stands still
  8. Closing challenge, ask before each scrolling binge whether it brings you closer to Allah, plus community duas
Try this week
Lower your gaze and guard your eyes from forbidden or useless looks
Cut back on binging scrolls, shorts, and videos that benefit neither dunya nor akhira
Before starting a scrolling binge, ask yourself whether it brings you closer to Allah or distances you from Him
Make dua for the sick community members named (a family member battling cancer and a mother facing open-heart surgery)

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb reminded us that our eyes, ears, and hearts will testify about every glance and secret on the Day of Judgment. He warned that a "sneaky glance", looking at something forbidden when we think no one sees, is still fully known to Allah. Our eyes are the biggest gateway to our hearts, and when we fill them with endless useless videos and images, our worship can start to feel empty. But there is good news: whoever lowers their gaze for Allah's sake is given the sweetness of iman, the love of Allah, and protection from the Fire. The simple test he gave is to ask ourselves before scrolling: will this bring me closer to Allah or push me away?

  1. What's one small thing our family can do this week to protect our eyes and hearts?
  2. Have you ever noticed that too much screen time makes salah or Quran feel harder to enjoy?
  3. What does it mean to you that Allah loves a person who lowers their gaze for Him?
