Faith must shape how we treat others
“Islam is not proven by what we say but by what we give and sacrifice.”
The khutbah argues that recognizing Allah as the wise Creator must lead to prompt acceptance of truth, humble stewardship, truthful speech, generosity, and dignified treatment of others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses cosmic order, life, and natural balance to argue for one wise Creator.
- Contrasts revelation-guided belief with philosophical speculation and says science can strengthen faith.
- Recounts Abu Dharr's search for the Prophet, immediate conversion, public courage, and influence on his tribe.
- Explains the Prophet's warning that leadership is a trust and wealth must be used responsibly.
- Highlights Abu Dharr's correction over prejudice and care for those under one's authority.
- Concludes that faith is proven through truth, giving, sacrifice, and resistance to greed and comfort.
In the khateeb's words
“The more the science expands, the more evidence is achieved of the existence of absolute, creative wisdom.”
“Leadership is a trust, it's not a privilege, and because of that it will be a source of disgrace and regrets.”
“Islam is not proven by what we say but by what we give and sacrifice.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah teaches that the order and balance of creation point to Allah, the one Creator, and that knowledge should deepen faith rather than weaken it. It then tells the story of Abu Dharr, who recognized the Prophet's truth, accepted Islam quickly, and helped others find it. The Prophet's guidance shows that leadership is a trust, wealth should be shared, and people under our care deserve dignity, fair treatment, and help. We are asked to speak truthfully, resist greed and comfort, keep learning the Qur'an and Sunnah, and show our faith through what we give and sacrifice.
- What is one responsibility you can treat more like a trust this week?
- How can our family share more generously with neighbors or people in need?
- What does it look like to prove faith through what we give?
