True religiosity is shown through character
“A good Muslim is a good human being in the first place.”
True religiosity is measured less by accumulated knowledge or outward status than by sincere worship, fulfilled obligations, avoidance of major sins, and the steady cultivation of prophetic character.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah opens with Eid congratulations and identifies confusion between religiosity and akhlaq, or character.
- It distinguishes the technical validity of worship from Allah’s acceptance, which depends on taqwa and sincerity.
- It defines a good Muslim as someone who fulfills basic obligations, follows the Sunnah, avoids major sins, and shows good character.
- It warns that martyrdom, scholarship, and charity can be rejected when pursued for public recognition.
- It uses the Prophet’s character, Khadijah’s testimony, and marriage guidance to show the importance of truthfulness, family care, generosity, and decency.
- It closes by urging transformation through daily self-refinement, sincere reliance on Allah, taqwa, zuhd, and haya.
In the khateeb's words
“a good muslim is a good human being in the first place”
“someone who has characters like this who speaks truth who's good to their family who helps the needy who honors their guests and who stands with the truth Allah will never let them down”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that being religious is not mainly about knowing the most, leading prayer, or appearing impressive. It is about worshiping Allah sincerely, keeping the basic obligations, avoiding major sins, following the Sunnah as we can, and treating people with honesty, patience, generosity, loyalty, and care. The speaker reminds us that Allah sees the intention behind our deeds, so knowledge and charity must change who we are rather than serve our reputation. Khadijah recognized the Prophet’s truthfulness, care for family, help for the needy, hospitality, and commitment to truth as signs that Allah would not abandon him. Each day, we can ask Allah to help us refine our character and become a little better than we were before.
- there's a difference between validity and acceptance fiqhi validity is one thing acceptance is another
- it's really about transformation not just information because having information without improvement without tazkiyah
- you are good to your family and you don't speak lies you speak truth all the time
- not everybody needs to be a preacher not everybody needs to be a scholar you can be a leader
