Give now because wealth is not yours
“You want to spend as much as Allah gave you because you never know where your soul will come to your throat.”
Recognizing that Allah alone owns our lives, wealth, families, and worship should replace possessiveness with humility, timely generosity, sincere devotion, and trust in His guidance.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A prophetic report about human origin and delayed charity establishes humility and urgency.
- Allah created and honored humanity, so believers should detach their hearts from worldly ownership and attach them to Him.
- Surah al-Baqarah frames creation, purpose, and final destination through servitude and following divine guidance.
- Awe of the Quran should release fear and lead to moral self-evaluation.
- Stories of Fir'aun, Musa and al-Khidr, and Ibn al-Qayyim's flower illustrate that possessions, family, children, and worship belong to Allah.
- The khutbah closes by urging better, punctual prayer and offering supplications for oppressed Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“You own nothing. You came to this land temporary. And you start asking the questions of who and why and why.”
“Instead, you want to spend as much as Allah gave you because you never know where your soul will come to your throat.”
“Your children your family belong to Allah Perhaps you want to start changing the strategy of teaching and growing and taking care of your children by elevating this matter to Allah”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminds us that Allah created us and gave us everything we have, so we do not truly own our bodies, wealth, families, or time. Because life can end suddenly, we should not wait until the last moment to give charity or turn back to Him. Remembering Allah with awe should help us let go of fear, examine our habits, and follow His guidance. Our children and possessions are trusts, so we should care for them with humility. Even when our worship feels imperfect, Allah is generous; we should respond by coming to salah on time and offering our best.
- What is one thing we have that we should treat as Allah’s trust?
- How can our family practice giving before waiting for more?
- What would help us make our salah more attentive this week?
