Hear every side before judging
“You cannot find the perfect person on the surface of earth, my friend.”
The khutbah teaches that believers should reflect deeply, avoid hasty judgment by hearing every side, and patiently accept imperfect people while pursuing justice and wisdom.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Ramadan should prioritize thoughtful Qur'an study, tafsir, and reflection over completing large quantities of recitation.
- The story of David and two disputants in Surah Sad illustrates the danger of judging before hearing both sides.
- Justice requires resisting emotion and personal desire, especially in family, marriage, politics, and community conflicts.
- People differ and may not change despite sincere advice, so believers should try to help them while accepting their imperfections.
- Patience, forgiveness, and accommodation are especially important in marriage and difficult relationships.
- The khutbah closes by inviting attendance at Ramadan programs and support for community iftars.
In the khateeb's words
“It's not the quantity of the Qur'an that you read during the month of Ramadan, which is important. It's the quality reading.”
“You cannot find the perfect person on the surface of earth my friend. God wants us to live with each other. As we are.”
“Try to change them. If you cannot. Then accept them. Leave the rest to God.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Ramadan is a chance to slow down with the Qur'an and seek understanding, not merely finish many pages. He used the story of David to teach us to hear every side before judging and to let truth, not emotion, guide us. He also said that people are different and imperfect, so we should try to help one another while learning patience and acceptance. In marriage and family life, he encouraged forgiveness, perseverance, and leaving what we cannot change to Allah. He invited the community to share Ramadan evenings at the masjid and support the iftar program.
- What does it mean to listen to both sides before deciding who is right?
- How can we be patient with someone without giving up on helping them improve?
- What Qur'an or masjid activity would you like to make time for this Ramadan?
