Good character completes our faith
“Indeed a believer can attain through his good character the rank of one who regularly fasts and stands in prayer.”
The khutbah’s central claim is that good character is a foundational expression of Islam and faith: worship must shape kind, truthful, patient dealings with others, or its spiritual benefit is endangered.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces noble character as a foundation of Islam, iman, and ihsan.
- Uses Quranic descriptions of righteousness to connect belief and worship with charity, promises, patience, and conduct.
- Presents hadith linking good character with complete faith, righteousness, and high spiritual rank.
- Warns that harming others can nullify the benefit of prayer, fasting, and charity.
- Explains that worship should shape dealings with Muslims, non-Muslims, and neighbors.
- Illustrates forbearance and neighborly care through stories of Zayd ibn Su'nah and Abdullah ibn Amr, then urges Muslims in the West to represent Islam through conduct.
- Concludes with supplications for good character and the vulnerable, followed by prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“good character and noble manners are among the objectives for which the prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was sent”
“indeed a believer can attain through his good character the rank of one who regularly fasts and stands in prayer”
“you are a representative of your religion you are a real image of this religion through you you can call the people to the religion of Allah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that Islam is not only prayer, fasting, and other worship; it also appears in how we treat people. Good character, truthfulness, keeping trusts, patience, kindness, and avoiding harm, is part of faith and can raise a believer’s rank. The speaker warned that worship can be undermined when someone insults, cheats, or harms others, especially neighbors. He encouraged us to answer bad behavior with something better, care for our neighbors, including non-Muslim neighbors, and let our conduct represent Islam. We ended by asking Allah to purify our character and guide our actions.
- When did someone’s kindness change the way you felt about them?
- How can we show good character to a neighbor this week?
- What can we do when someone makes us angry?
