Guard your thoughts, words, and character
“Watch your thoughts; they become words.”
Because Islam is the enduring, universal truth that guides each person back to Allah, believers must preserve it through grateful faith, gentle conduct, and family life centered on pleasing Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Quranic signs in the horizons and within people establish truth over distorted facts and opinions.
- Islam’s universal, personal message draws people across cultures, which believers should recognize with gratitude.
- Quranic categories of people, hypocrites, conditional believers, and those devoted to Allah, invite self-examination.
- Faith requires patience through tests, gentle engagement, and caution against declaring others outside Islam.
- Families should protect one another from Hellfire through justice, support, and learning from Quranic examples.
- Believers should monitor thoughts, words, actions, and character while striving to please Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“Islam is universal with a universality message to mankind that speaks direct to the heart of individuals.”
“So the message is simpler to each one of us. Why? Because we will go back to Him individually.”
“Our, you know, the cordon of teaching of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is to strengthen family. Family.”
“Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become actions. Watch your actions. They become character. Watch your character. They become your destiny.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah shows His signs in the world and within ourselves, and he encouraged us to be grateful for Islam. He described Islam as a message for people of every background that speaks to each person's heart. He urged us to treat people gently and to remain steady in faith when life is difficult. Bringing these lessons home, he explained that parents and children share the purpose of pleasing Allah, with justice as an important responsibility. He closed by reminding us to watch our thoughts, because they shape our words, actions, character, and eventually our destiny.
- How could you say something difficult kindly when you are upset?
