Envy destroys peace and good deeds

“Beware of envy because what envy does is to consume all your good deeds.”

The khateeb, at 10:00

The khutbah explains that envy is wishing someone else loses what Allah has given them. Healthy competition, such as wanting to learn Quran because someone else learned it, can help a community grow, but envy turns admiration into resentment, lies, and harm. Allah knows what suits each person, so another person's blessing may not be right for us. When we notice a blessing, we should pray for that person, ask Allah for what is best for us, use our time well, and pursue beneficial knowledge or generosity.

  1. When have you felt inspired by someone else's good deed, and how could you keep that feeling healthy?
  2. What can we say or do when we notice a blessing in someone else?
  3. What is one way we can use our time more purposefully this week?
