Contentment matters more than worldly status

“Contentment does not mean abandoning efforts.”

The khateeb, at 23:32

In one sentence

Because worldly wealth, status, and appearance are tests rather than measures of honor, Muslims should pursue lawful provision, remain grateful and content with Allah’s decree, and compete in worship and character instead of comparison.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that this world is a test, and wealth, status, beauty, and comfort can test us just as poverty can. Contentment does not mean giving up: we should work through halal means, then be at peace with what Allah gives us. We should be grateful for faith, health, safety, food, shelter, and family, and avoid showing off or chasing brands. Honest buying and selling matter, so we should not use something and return it just to appear wealthy, and we should remove haram from our work. In worldly matters we can look to those with less, while in faith, knowledge, and character we should look to those ahead of us.

  1. What blessing did you notice today that you usually overlook?
  2. How can we work hard without letting money or brands control our hearts?
  3. Who is a good role model for faith and character, and what can we learn from them?
