Ramadan worship should lead to Hajj
“The Lord of Ramadan is the Lord of Shawwal.”
The purpose of Ramadan is to cultivate lasting taqwa, so Muslims should carry its worship into Shawwal and promptly prepare for the obligatory Hajj if they meet its conditions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflects on Ramadan's purpose as taqwa and urges worship to continue through Shawwal.
- Introduces Shawwal as the beginning of the Hajj months and turns attention to neglected Hajj.
- Explains Hajj as an Islamic pillar and a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for those able.
- Defines ability through travel, provisions, financial means, and support for one's family.
- Lists five conditions for Hajj: Islam, maturity, sanity, freedom, and ability.
- Promises further Hajj-focused khutbahs and closes with supplications.
In the khateeb's words
“what have I gained from Ramadan was it only a month of fasting and starvation or was it a month of reflection was it a month of getting close to Allah”
“the Lord of Ramadan is the Lord of Shawwal the Lord of Ramadan is the Lord of the rest of the year”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Ramadan was a gift to help us become more mindful of Allah, and that our worship should continue throughout the year. Reading Quran and praying during Ramadan showed us habits we can keep building. As Shawwal begins, he asked us to turn our attention to Hajj and take learning about all five pillars seriously, especially Hajj and zakat. He explained that Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who meet its conditions, including the ability to travel and provide for themselves and the family they leave behind. He urged those who meet the conditions to act rather than put Hajj off until old age.
- Which Ramadan habit would you like us to keep practicing together?
- What is one thing you would like to learn about Hajj or zakat?
- How can we encourage one another to follow through on an important act of worship?
