Peace can be a greater victory
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah teaches that accepting a difficult peace agreement with patience and trust in Allah can be a greater victory than winning a battle.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces the Hudaybiyyah peace agreement and its prohibition on hostilities.
- Explains the unequal clauses requiring Muslims to return Meccans while retaining Muslims who came from Medina.
- Describes the companions’ disappointment and the Prophet’s acceptance of the agreement.
- Connects the treaty to Allah’s declaration of a manifest victory.
- Recounts a Meccan convert being returned and concludes by emphasizing Allah’s presence beyond any single place.
In the khateeb's words
“if any individual from mecca they come to al-madina agreement number four send them back number five if any muslim come from madina to mecca we will keep them we don't have to return them”
“but remember abu judeh Allah is not only in al madina Allah is also in mecca”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reflected on the treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the Prophet Muhammad’s acceptance of an agreement that included difficult terms for the Muslims. The khateeb asked us to imagine the disappointment of traveling a long way in great heat and then being told to turn back. He explained that former enemies becoming willing to sit down and make peace was itself a victory. The khutbah also highlighted the Prophet’s faithfulness to the agreement when someone came from Mecca wishing to embrace Islam. Together, these points invite us to value peace, keep our commitments, and trust Allah when the way forward is hard.
- What could help you calm down if a long-awaited plan ended in disappointment?
- What might a peaceful victory look like in a disagreement with a friend?
- When has keeping a promise been difficult for you?
