Let your character make Islam visible
“We as Muslims are not supposed to just be takers.”
Muslims must embody Islam through exemplary character and civic responsibility so their conduct benefits society and makes the faith visible to others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces believers as banners of Islam whose conduct can inspire others to engage with the Quran.
- Uses early converts and Ja'far's speech before Najashi to show Islam transforms morality and social behavior.
- Argues that Quranic commands heavily emphasize duties toward creation, including honesty, family, neighbors, orphans, and the environment.
- Uses Muslim traders in Indonesia as an example of character spreading Islam without military conquest.
- Calls Mississauga Muslims to confront Islamophobia through municipal civic engagement, informed voting, and questions for candidates.
- Concludes with three takeaways: civic engagement, professional integrity, and self-control, followed by prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“This was the essence of Islam, my brothers and sisters.”
“we understand that we as Muslims are not supposed to just be takers, we're supposed to be givers.”
“Show up on time. Be honest. Be just. Be kind. Be smiling.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Islam should be visible in the way we treat people, not only in our worship. The speaker used Ja'far before the Negus and the example of honest Muslim traders to show that truthfulness, trust, kindness, and good character can open hearts. He urged Muslims in Mississauga to respond to Islamophobia by becoming engaged citizens, asking municipal candidates about safety and hate crimes, and voting in the election. He ended by calling us to civic responsibility, professional integrity, self-control, patience, gratitude, and service to people facing oppression.
- How can our family show good character to neighbors and classmates this week?
- What should we ask candidates who want our votes?
- Which good habit would help us represent Islam better?
