Trust Allah while taking the means

“A blessed life means that you're connected to Allah.”

The khateeb, at 90:41

In one sentence

True reliance on Allah combines responsible effort with trust in His control of outcomes, while genuine worship requires humility, compassion, and refusing to judge others.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Explains tawakkul through the bird: leave the nest, pursue provision, and trust Allah with the result.
  2. Uses Quranic consultation and Ibrahim’s fire to show that effort does not control outcomes.
  3. Applies the principle to jobs, medicine, food, clothing, security, fuel, and locking doors.
  4. Warns against fake reliance through examples of travelers without provisions, an empty gas tank, and a distracted driver.
  5. Contrasts humble worship with Iblis’s superiority and warns against judging other Muslims.
  6. Uses stories of Salman, Abu Darda, Jabir, Rabia, and Julaybib to teach family rights, empowerment, generosity, and compassionate matchmaking.
  7. Closes with calls to smile, surprise people with happiness, include Muslims beyond one’s circle, and stay connected to Allah.

Take available means: seek advice, work, fill the gas tank, dress for the weather, lock doors, and use security precautions.
After consulting others and making a decision, rely on Allah rather than on the tool or cause.
Say Bismillah and ask Allah for protection, provision, mercy, and blessing.
Avoid judging another Muslim’s worship or treating anyone as less Muslim.
Smile, check on someone, give an unexpected gift, and include people outside your usual background.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today we heard that trusting Allah means doing our part while relying on Him for the outcome. Like the bird that leaves its nest hungry, we should make an effort, prepare, and seek good advice. We also heard that we should not look down on someone because their good deeds look different from ours. A smile, a thoughtful surprise, or help that preserves someone's dignity can be a meaningful way to serve Allah. A blessed life includes both happy moments and times that call for patience, with our hearts connected to Allah through both.

  1. What is something you can work on this week while asking Allah for help?
  2. Who could you surprise with a kind word or thoughtful action tomorrow?
  3. What good deed have you noticed someone doing that you would like to appreciate?
