Talha’s courage shows true faith
“The Prophet, he is not amongst us when we physically defend him.”
Talha ibn Ubaydullah’s courageous love and loyalty to the Prophet exemplify true faith, which Muslims should emulate by following the Prophet’s Sunnah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with praise, Qur’anic exhortations to fear Allah, and prayers for Gaza and oppressed Muslims.
- Urges Muslims to learn from the Prophet and Companions rather than celebrity role models.
- Introduces Talha ibn Ubaydullah as a generous Qurayshi businessman among the ten promised Paradise.
- Uses Surah al-Ahzab to contrast steadfast believers with hypocrites and frame Talha as one who fulfilled his promise.
- Recounts Talha’s courage at Uhud, including protecting the injured Prophet and sacrificing his body.
- Uses Ali’s respect for Talha after the Battle of Jamal to teach reverence amid disagreement.
- Concludes that love for Allah and the Prophet is shown by following the Prophet’s Sunnah.
In the khateeb's words
“But when it comes to the Prophet We know very little. And when it comes to the best of the best of the Prophet , the Khyirul Qurun, the Sahaba, we know even less.”
“Talha bin Ubaidullah comes, he puts his body underneath the Prophet as a support for the Prophet.”
“The Prophet , he is not amongst us when we physically defend him. but we defend His honor. And how do we defend His honor? We practice His sunnahs, His ways.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on Talha ibn Ubaydullah, a Companion promised Paradise and known for generosity and courageous love for the Prophet Muhammad. During Uhud, Talha protected the Prophet and put his own body at risk, showing what faithful commitment can look like. The sermon reminded us that hardship can sometimes deepen faith rather than weaken it. It also highlighted Ali’s respect for Talha despite painful conflict among the Companions. For us, love of Allah and His Messenger is shown by learning and practicing the Prophet’s Sunnah.
- What is one thing you would like to learn about the Prophet or his Companions?
- When has a difficult experience helped you become stronger in faith?
- Which Sunnah would you like our family to practice together this week?
