Allah’s justice calls us to humility
“Give them the benefit of the doubt.”
Allah’s justice means He gives every person what they need for success in the hereafter, calling believers to humility, self-examination, compassion, and confidence in their Islamic identity.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines divine justice through balance, equality, rights, and merit.
- Argues that Allah gives each person what they need for hereafter success and never oppresses.
- Uses intellectual reasoning and Quranic evidence to establish divine justice.
- Teaches humility, self-examination, benefit of the doubt, and privately concealing others’ faults.
- Honors Jesus as a major prophet and draws ethical lessons from his teachings.
- Distinguishes Christian Christmas from Canadian culture and Islamic religious celebrations.
- Encourages Muslims to strengthen and joyfully practice their own celebrations while respecting Christian neighbors.
In the khateeb's words
“But keep in mind, the success that we are talking about is not a dunyawi success.”
“Give them the benefit of the doubt. Find excuses for them.”
“And so while we are personally avoiding the celebration of this holiday, and we should avoid the celebration of this holiday, at the same time we can be happy for our Christian brothers and sisters as they celebrate their holiday.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Allah is perfectly just and gives each person what they need to succeed in the hereafter. We should respond by trusting Allah, strengthening our families’ understanding of faith, and examining our own faults before criticizing others. When people make mistakes, we should avoid publicizing them, give them the benefit of the doubt, and speak privately when correction is necessary. Muslims honor Jesus as a great prophet while recognizing that Christmas is a Christian, not Islamic, celebration. We can maintain our own religious identity, enjoy our Islamic celebrations more fully, and still show kindness to Christian neighbors.
- What does it mean to succeed in the hereafter?
- How can we hide someone’s mistake while still helping them improve?
- What could our family do to make an Islamic celebration more joyful?
