Meet Dhul-Hijjah with sincere devotion
“The primary concern of a believer is whether this deed is accepted by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
As the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah approach, believers should meet anxiety, loneliness, and helplessness by renewing sincere presence with Allah, practicing remembrance, sacrifice, trust, and attentive care for others.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces the exceptional virtue of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and the value of beloved good deeds.
- Emphasizes that sincerity and acceptance matter more than the amount or appearance of a deed.
- Recommends remembrance of Allah and connects the sacred days to anxiety, loneliness, distraction, and helplessness.
- Presents Hajj’s talbiyah as a call for everyone, including imperfect and struggling believers, to be fully present before Allah.
- Uses the stories of Ibrahim, Ismail, and Musa’s mother to teach sacrifice, ethical restraint, and trust in Allah.
- Explains sacrificing ego, comfort, and status for nearness to Allah, illustrated through the cave story and a Hajjaj anecdote.
- Closes with practical encouragement toward fasting, charity, helpfulness, and giving others full attention.
In the khateeb's words
“Everything about our deeds, everything about it is secondary. The primary concern of a believer is whether this deed is accepted by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“To be more present and to pay more full attention to the person in front of you. To the task in front of you. And to turn off other things.”
“What can harm you? Who do you need when Allah is with you? Nobody and nothing.”
For the dinner table
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a special chance to do good deeds that Allah loves. The khutbah reminds us that sincerity matters more than looking impressive or doing a large number of deeds. We can answer Allah’s call by being present with Him, trusting Him through our worries, and choosing what is right even when it costs us comfort, status, or money. We can also push back against loneliness by giving our family and neighbors our full attention and helping them in practical ways. This week, we can remember Allah, give charity, fast if able, and show up for people around us.
- Where could we practice giving someone our full attention this week?
- What is one good deed we can do sincerely, without seeking recognition?
- What distraction or comfort could we set aside to become closer to Allah?
