Hajj should change how we live
“When you come from Hajj, be a changed man.”
Hajj is meant to awaken believers to death and the Day of Resurrection, transforming that awareness into ethical living through equality, care for women, respect for human life, rejection of interest, and adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Explains the sequence and significance of the Hajj season.
- Uses Muzdalifah's sleeping pilgrims in white as a preview of death and the grave.
- Connects Arafat's mass supplication to the Day of Resurrection and urges post-Hajj transformation.
- Introduces the Prophet's Farewell Sermon at Arafat and asks listeners to study it.
- Summarizes its teachings on equality, women's rights, brotherhood, and the sanctity of human life.
- Condemns indifference to suffering and reiterates the prohibition of interest.
- Closes with Qur'an 5:3 and a call to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah.
In the khateeb's words
“So now, after seeing this, you should wake up now. When you come from Hajj, be a changed man. Be a changed woman.”
“There is no superiority. To an Arab. Over non-Arab. And same way. There is no superiority. To a non-Arab. Over Arab.”
“Do treat your woman. Well. And be kind to them. For they are your partners. And committed helpers.”
For the dinner table
Imam Tariq reminded us that Hajj offers lessons about how we live and our return to Allah. He described pilgrims sleeping side by side in Muzdalifah, where wealth makes no difference, and making heartfelt dua and seeking forgiveness in Arafat. He urged us to let these reminders lead to lasting changes in our lives. Drawing on the Prophet’s Farewell Sermon, he emphasized equality, kindness and respect toward women, and our responsibility to oppose injustice and protect innocent lives. He also discussed the prohibition of interest and holding on to the Quran and Sunnah. He encouraged everyone to read the Farewell Sermon, study it, and put its teachings into practice.
- What can pilgrims sleeping side by side teach us about treating everyone with respect?
- What is one way we can show more kindness and respect at home this week?
- How could our family help someone who is being treated unfairly?
