Worship must produce good character

“If your manners are bad manners, you will be among the losers on the Day of Judgment.”

The khateeb, at 18:11

In one sentence

True Islamic devotion is incomplete unless prayer, fasting, and other worship produce good character, which believers should cultivate through reflection, learning, practice, and righteous companionship.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Introduces Prophet Muhammad as humanity’s guide who embodied the Quran, Sunnah, and excellent manners.
  2. Argues that good character is the fruit and test of worship, using the example of the spiritually bankrupt person.
  3. Uses the building analogy to explain that the five pillars are part of a fuller Islamic way of life.
  4. Presents good manners as a gateway to Paradise, a religious obligation, and the basis of strong families and communities.
  5. Gives four methods for developing character: self-reflection, seeking knowledge, repeated practice, and choosing good companions; closes with supplication.
